Combined Step

Use a Combined workflow step to group related technician work into one FORGE Mobile step with child tabs. Administrators choose the tabs, their order, and which tabs must be completed before an appointment can be completed.

Create the Combined Step

  1. In FORGE, select Settings, Mobile, and then Workflow Designer.

  1. Select the workflow that should contain the Combined step, then select Add Step.

  1. Select the new step in the workflow outline and enter its basic settings.

    • Step Name: Enter the technician-facing name for the grouped step. Every workflow step must have a name before the workflow can be saved.

    • Step Type: Select Combined. This opens the Included steps area where you build the child-tab sequence.

    • Active: Leave selected to show the Combined step in the technician workflow. Clear it to retain the configuration while hiding the entire step and all of its child tabs.

A Combined step does not have a parent Required setting. Appointment completion is controlled by the Required settings on its included steps. If none are required, the Combined step does not block completion.

Add and Arrange Included Steps

  1. Add a child tab. Under Included steps, select Add included step. Repeat this action for each tab technicians need.

  1. Configure the included step. Use the controls on each child row to set its type, name, and completion behavior.

  2. Complete the following fields:

    • Select a type: Choose Equipment, PO, Products, Resolution, Tasks, or Time. Details and another Combined step are not available as child types.

    • Included step name: Enter the technician-facing child-tab name. The workflow cannot be saved while any included step has a blank name.

    • Required: Select this when the child must be complete before the appointment can be completed. Equipment is always optional, so its row shows Optional instead of this setting.

  3. Set the tab order. Drag included steps into position or use Move up and Move down. The saved order becomes the child-tab order in FORGE Mobile.

Use Remove to delete a child from the Combined step. At least one included step must remain before the workflow can be saved.

Configure a Product Child

  1. Choose the available product types. After selecting Products, set which product types technicians can view and add from this child tab.

  2. Complete the following fields:

    • Inventory: Include Inventory products in the child tab. It is selected by default for a newly configured Products child.

    • Non Inventory: Include Non Inventory products in the child tab. It is selected by default for a newly configured Products child.

    • Service: Include Service products in the child tab. It is selected by default for a newly configured Products child.

If no explicit product-type restriction is saved, the mobile runtime allows all three product types for compatibility with older workflows.

Configure a Resolution Child

Choose the AI option. After selecting Resolution, decide whether technicians may generate a proposed resolution summary.

  • Enable AI summary generation: Leave selected to show Generate Summary in the mobile Resolution tab. Clear it when technicians should enter the resolution manually. The designer prevents enabling this option until Registration AI Enhancements is configured.

Configure a Time Child

  1. Choose the time behavior. After selecting Time, configure which technician activity belongs in the tab.

  2. Complete the following fields:

    • Select time type: Select Labor, Travel, or Both. Both places Travel before Labor in the mobile tab, and either valid travel or labor activity satisfies a required Both child.

    • Enable Employee Reimbursements: Select this to let technicians enter reimbursements from this Time child. Reimbursements follow the selected time context and remain editable only while Open.

Configure an Equipment Child

  1. Choose equipment access. After selecting Equipment, set the note and equipment actions available to technicians.

    • Show annotations: Shows equipment annotations in the mobile child tab. This setting is selected for a new Equipment child.

    • Allow annotation CRUD: Allows technicians to create, update, and delete shown annotations. Clear it to make them read-only. It is unavailable when Show annotations is cleared.

    • Allow assignment editing: Allows technicians to assign location equipment to the parent service call or remove an existing assignment. This setting is selected for a new Equipment child.

    • Allow create new equipment: Allows technicians to create equipment for the appointment location. This setting is selected for a new Equipment child.

  2. Choose displayed fields. Use Available fields to add the standard or custom equipment fields technicians need, then arrange them in Selected fields.
    Complete the following fields:

    • Search available fields: Filter the picker by label, field key, or data type. The search is not saved with the workflow.

    • Read only: Select this for a supported editable field when technicians should view but not change it. Fields that do not support editing are locked to Read only.

Drag selected fields to reorder them, or use Move up and Move down. Equipment remains optional even when another child in the same Combined step is required.

Use PO and Tasks Children

  1. Add a PO child. Select PO when technicians need to work with purchase orders for the active service call. PO has no additional Combined-step setup fields.

  1. Add a Tasks child. Select Tasks when technicians need an appointment-task tab. Tasks has no additional Combined-step setup fields.

Set the Included step name and Required state on each child row, then place the tabs in the order technicians should follow.

Save and Verify

  1. Save the workflow. Select Save. Resolve any message about a missing child, name, type, or Time selection before trying again.

  1. Reload an open appointment. Saving notifies active FORGE Mobile sessions. A technician already inside an appointment that uses the workflow must return to the appointment list and reopen the appointment before the new definition appears.

  1. Verify the mobile tabs. Open an appointment that uses the workflow and confirm the Combined step shows the intended child names, order, options, and completion requirements.

  2. Result: The active workflow shows one Combined step with persistent child tabs. Required children control appointment completion; optional children remain available without blocking it.
